Did you know that there are four basic types of faucets for your tub? This means that it is very hard to diagnose the problem you may have if you do not know what type of faucet you have on your own tub. For residential plumbers, it is quite easy to figure out the problem because they know exactly what distinguishes each faucet from the other. On the other hand, if you are trying to do something yourself you may get rather confused if you do not know what you are really looking at. Just looking up how to fix a tub faucet does not mean you are getting proper instructions on your particular type. Each tub faucet has the same functions, turning the tub on and off and changing the temperature of the water, but they do have some different parts. In order for you to know exactly what type of tub faucet you have in your home, let us give you short descriptions of the four basic types.
Compression Faucet: this type of faucet has two different handles. These handles are able to regulate the flow of the water and the temperature of the water. These are more of a traditional style looking faucet for a bathtub. This style of faucet has rubber washers that are compressed that will either cut off or increase the water flow.
Disc Faucet: this type of faucet has only one handle on it. On the inside of this faucet there are two disks that move across each other. When you turn the faucet on the two discs slide across each other to regulate the flow of water. If you happen to have this type of faucet and there is a problem it is most likely due to one of the discs leaking.
Cartridge Faucet: this type of faucet may have one or two handles on them. This one has a movable plastic cartridge moving up and down the handle. When this cartridge moves up and down it is lining up holes that regulate the water. This type of faucet is super easy to fix because all that you need to do is drop in a brand new cartridge.
Ball Type Faucet: this type of faucet actually does have a ball in it. There is a steel ball somewhere in the handle of the faucet. This type of faucet is very common on kitchen sinks. It has the one handle that moves up, down, right, and left to regulate the water pressure and the temperature of the water.
